'A Day in the Death of Joe Egg'
by
Peter Nichols

A child with the kind of brain that doesn't allow for co-ordinated movement or communicative speech or gesture is more mysterious than most.

Such a child is 10-year-old Josephine. Nicknamed Joe Egg by her parents – in blackly comic fashion, because she's always sitting around doing nothing – she is the eponymous subject of Peter Nichols' 1967 play, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg.

Joe's parents are trying to cope with caring for her – and with other people's reactions to her. The skilful writing brings this dark subject into comedy to help them, and the audience, deal with the difficult, but real subject.

At no point making fun of the topic, this humour makes for a powerful, provoking and entertaining evening.

NB This comedy deals with ethical challenges and contains some discriminatory language. It is suitable for those aged 16 years and over.
