British baritone James Newby is the winner of the 2016 Kathleen Ferrier Award. In the same year he was the recipient of the Wigmore Hall/Independent Opera Voice Fellowship, having won the Richard Tauber Prize for best interpretation of a Schubert Lied in 2015.

In 2016, James joined the Glyndebourne Festival Chorus while continuing studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. The following year, as Jerwood Young Artist at Glyndebourne Festival Opera, he appeared in La Traviata, Hamlet, La Clemenza di Tito and took the role of the notary in Don Pasquale during the 2017 Festival, for which he won the prestigious John Christie Award.

James
enjoys a busy schedule as a recitalist;  recent and future highlights include appearances at Leeds’ Lieder Festival with Joseph Middleton, Oxford Lieder Festival with Eugene Asti and a solo recital at the Wigmore Hall. Future operatic highlights include Count Almaviva Le nozze di Figaro for Nevill Holt Opera, a staged Bach St John Passion with the Bilbao Orkestra SinfonikoaMozart’s C Minor Mass with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and performances with the Gabrieli Consort, OAE and for the London Handel and Newbury Festivals.

Highly acclaimed pianist, Joseph Middleton specialises in the art of song accompaniment and chamber music. He is Director of Leeds Lieder, Musician in Residence at Pembroke College Cambridge and a Professor at the Royal Academy of Music.

He collaborates with many of the world’s finest singers in major venues worldwide, for example regularly at New York’s Alice Tully Hall, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Konzerthaus Wien, Zürich Tonhalle, Köln Philharmonie, Luxembourg Philharmonie, Musée d’Orsay in Paris and London’s Wigmore Hall, as well as Aldeburgh, Aix-en-Provence and Edinburgh Festivals.

Recently he performed among others with Sir Thomas Allen, Ian Bostridge, Lucy Crowe, Simon Keenlyside and Dame Felicity Lott and in 2016 he made his BBC Proms debut with Iestyn Davies and Carolyn Sampson. Operamagazine.nl hailed  Joseph as ‘rightful heir to the legendary accompanist Gerald Moore’.
