Kairos is an ancient Greek word meaning the right or opportune moment. The ancient Greeks had two words for time, chronos and kairos. While the former refers to chronological or sequential time, the latter signifies a time in between, an undetermined moment of time in which something special happens. What the special something is depends on who is using the word. While chronos is quantitative, kairos has a qualitative nature.
Formed in the spring of 2008 to play the original compositions of saxophonist
Adam Waldmann,
Kairos 4tet features some of the UK's most exciting, young instrumentalists. From ferocious grooves to plaintive, soaring melodies with an emphasis on rhythmically engaging, communicative lyricism-
Kairos 4tet's collective spirit was recently put to "tape" for their debut album
'Kairos Moment'. Kairos 4tet websiteRecorded over a weekend in October 2008 at Phoenix Sound, in Pinewood Studios, London, it is the opening account of a band already making positive waves:
"Kairos Quartet are that most difficult of beasts to write snappily about: a no-frills, no-gimmicks, serious-minded band, playing original (Waldmann) compositions imbued solely with musicianly values….. the band's verve is considerable, and they have enough faithful, enthusiastic admirers to fill the club- and deservedly so, because they're a class act " Chris Parker, The BBC, Jazz Review, The Vortex"Simply put, if you enjoy Avishai Cohen, Phronesis, or Esbjörn Svensson, you’ll enjoy Kairos 4tet. Waldmann’s sax is engaging and brings a unique identity the band.......... Kairos Moment is certainly a very complete album in that each track flows..........a diverse and moving experience......." Dan Cutright (Obnoxious Listeners)
"The perfect mix of freshness, rigour and beauty....4*" Al Brownlee (Manchester Evening News) "......this is a fine record of an impressive band led by an adroit and original composer" Chris Parker (The Vortex, BBC, Jazz Review) “There is no showing off I can discern here – it feels like four young men intend on the selfless exploration of what is special in the moment, and how best they can share it with the listening world. The Kairos moment, in other words.” Peter Bacon, The Jazz Breakfast
