Piano Teachers' and Friends' Concert In aid of the Organ Fund
The piano teachers at Truro School unite (with some friends) and take advantage of the numerous keyboards found in Truro Methodist to present a varied programme of music both serious and light-hearted for your entertainment.
With two grand pianos, one upright, two digital pianos, plus the recently restored church pipe organ and more than enough players to man these instruments it promises to be an exciting if not outrageous evening!
Do come along and hear some of the county’s most well-know performers in action.
Organ Fund
From 1965 to 2003 the School Chapel housed a small organ by George Osmond & Co. of Taunton.
Unfortunately, this little instrument was not built or designed to lead a congregation of some 300 (as it was required to do most mornings of the week). As a result, when it appeared that it was going to cost the school in the region of £20-30,000 to have this little instrument taken out, refurbished and put back as part of the Chapel refurbishment, a decision was made to look for a more suitable organ.
After two years of searching we were very lucky to be informed that (having received a single donation of £500,000) Jesus College, Cambridge were about to purchase a new Swiss Organ for their Chapel. As a result, they were looking for a home for their 1970s Mander Organ.
With two exceptions, the Mander Organ is in fine musical and mechanical condition. Rather like a good quality house requiring new plumbing and wiring, the mechanical key action and electric stop action now need to be replaced, in order to bring the instrument back to an almost new condition. If we were to purchase a brand new instrument of this size and quality then we would be facing a purchase price of approximately £250,000. This is therefore a wonderful opportunity for Truro School and will allow us to build upon our excellent musical reputation.
When this is done we will have a very fine, classical pipe organ able to lead large congregations, accompany the School’s Senior Choir in complex choral repertoire and also be ideal for regular teaching and recital performances, in a way that has not been possible before at the School.
More than half of the funds needed have been raised for this exciting project and all proceeds from tonight’s concert with go towards installing the Mander Organ in this fine Chapel in the Summer of 2010.
If you would like to make a donation please speak with the Headmaster, Mr Paul Smith, or Director of Music, Mr Martin Palmer.

This is the Burrell Theatre at Truro, Cornwall
The Burrell was officially opened by Sir Tim Rice in 2002, and went on to be awarded a special commendation by the Cornwall Buildings Group.
The Burrell plays host to theatre and dance companies from Cornwall and all over the country, plus live music, lectures and conferences.
The Burrell also has its own theatre company in residence: Cube Theatre Company produce one show a year at the Burrell which they then tour the country with. This gives pupils from Truro School an opportunity to witness the production process of a professional show.
They also produce and direct three Truro School shows a year. The Burrell Theatre also host Truro Schools A-level and GCSE theatre studies and drama productions.
To say the least, the Burrell Theatre is a very busy and vibrant theatre, and is fast becoming Cornwall’s favourite multi purpose venue.
