Sabotage Theatre Company
We Are Not Shellfish'
Sabotage Theatre Company is coming to Carn Marth Amphitheatre in Redruth, with ‘We Are Not Shellfish’; a raucous new play combining clown, mask and puppetry with a powerful social message.
Leah is angry about the world; she is trying to collect all the plastic out of the ocean before it’s too late. She keeps getting into fights with the hateful boy in her class who squashes ants. Leah lies awake wrestling with infinity; it’s hard to be quite a small child in such a large universe. Her father says she should spend less time worrying about ‘adult problems’ and more time trying to make friends.
Then one day, Leah finds the best piece of sea treasure ever, a plastic bottle with a mysterious phone number inside. Soon she finds herself in conversation with Miriam, an enigmatic girl adrift in the sea of humanity of the Calais Jungle. But when the text messages stop, Leah must summon all her courage to build a boat from salvaged plastic and embark on an epic voyage to find her friend.
We Are Not Shellfish combines Sabotage Theatre’s vibrant visual aesthetic with a provocative story of protest and rebellion. It asks what one small person can do to save the world.
Artistic Director Zoe Hinks explains, “I started to write the play when I was volunteering for The Flying Seagull Project; a charity who bring laughter to families in crisis around the world. I was really inspired by how they use joy as a weapon to fight back against apathy and injustice. I realised it was important to make a play that used this joyful approach; if it isn’t fun, then people close themselves off. What we need to do right now is stand together.”
Adults and children alike are sure to be enchanted by this rollicking, fast-paced adventure with bite.
Sabotage Theatre is a grassroots theatre company with a passion for adventure. Their work has been called “heartfelt anarchic theatre at its best” (Queer Puppet Cabaret) and “funny, subversive, deeply philosophical and beautiful” (Fringe Review – Highly Recommended).
Sabotage Theatre have performed in woods, abandoned barns, lost villages and festivals across the UK in their quest to connect audiences viscerally with their work.
Audiences can expect an experience which is surprising, unique and uncompromisingly live.

Carn Marth Trust
Carn Marth, a hill in West Cornwall, lies a couple of miles southeast of Redruth and is one of the series of ancient hills that run down the backbone of Cornwall stretching all the way to Lands End.
That they have attracted people through the ages is hardly a surprise. From before the Bronze Age they have been natural places of refuge, offering easily defended bases and view points out over what was the densely wooded landscape of prehistoric Britain.
In more recent times they have been perfect sites for beacons to warn of impending attack, mark victories and celebrations of all sorts.
