Art, Modernism, St Ives & Jacob’s Room

Study Day led by Sarah Latham Phillips MA

Virginia Woolf's novels of the 1920's are highly innovative, creative and Modernist in their design. We will study in depth Jacob’s Room (1922), and look too, at the importance of St Ives, Cornwall and Art to her life and work.

Sarah Phillips is well-known in the West Country as a freelance lecturer and WEA Tutor. Her earlier career was spent at the Courtauld Institute of Art, and she is involved with the Charleston Trust in Sussex and a Member of the Executive Council of the Virginia Woolf Society of Great Britain.

Sarah has been studying Bloomsbury art and literature for the last 25 years and wrote her MA thesis on Virginia Woolf as a Cubist Writer in 2010. She was one of the speakers for the National Portrait Gallery Exhibition: Art, Life and Vision in 2014, curated by Frances Spalding and spoke at the St Ives September Festival in 2016.


Tea & Coffee will be provided.

There will be a break for lunch. Please either bring a packed lunch, or there are several cafes close by.

NB  Early booking is recommended as the capacity is limited
