Waiting For Godot

Burrell Theatre, Truro School, Trennick Lane

Waiting For Godot

Date: Saturday 3rd March 2012
Time: 19:30

“Nothing happens, nobody comes, nobody goes, it is terrible.” Jean Anouilh’s judgement on the premiere of WAITING FOR GODOT went on to conclude that the play would, in time, represent the most important play to be staged in Paris for forty years.

Nobody who is acquainted with Beckett’s masterly black comedy would now question this prescient recognition of a classic of twentieth-century European theatre.

WAITING FOR GODOT forced a reconsideration of what theatre is and what it could be. Kenneth Tynan remarked that the play prompted him to reflect on the “rules” governing drama and “having done so, to pronounce them not elastic enough. Godot is validly new.”

“I told Ralph Richardson that if by Godot I had meant God I would have said God, and not Godot. This seemed to disappoint him greatl!” Samuel Beckett 1954.
