Sara MacDonald: 'A Novelist Abroad' -

Sara MacDonald: 'A Novelist Abroad'

Date: Wednesday 25th July 2012
Time: 12:30

Sara MacDonald, who has recently returned from a year in Pakistan will talk about her travels and experiences and how they have inspired her writing.

Sara has spent much of her life as a gypsy, without roots. She travelled as a child, and went to many schools, ending her education in a strict Catholic convent in Malta while her parents lived in Cyprus. She was set on an acting career and after working as an ASM in The Theatre Royal Windsor she won a place at the London Academy of Music and Drama.

However, her acting career was brief. She went off to Germany, Norway, Sharjah, then on to Singapore and Malaysia as an army wife. She kept journals of her time in the Middle East, and her first novel, 'Falls The Shadow' (now out of print), was published in 1989 by a small independent publisher.

Eventually, tiring of an itinerant life, Sara moved to Cornwall and put down roots. Having secured an agent, her next two novels, 'Listening to Voices' and 'The Sleep of Birds' were published by Headline. 'Sea Music' was published by Harper Collins to critical acclaim, and she followed it with three more novels, 'Another Life', 'The Hour Before Dawn' and 'Come Away With Me'.

At the end of 2009 she took the decision to take time off to travel. After visiting Oman, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, she lived for a year in Karachi, Pakistan. Her latest book is set in Karachi and is due to be published later this year.
