Penzance Folk Club presents a Folk Ceilidh with live music from Smash the Windows

The Band for the night, "Smash the Windows" have callers Helen Musser, for the Cornish dances, and Alan Collins, for English dances.

Smash the Windows are a local folk band whose members also play in the Golowan Band. So it's not surprising that they play a repertoire of foot-tapping, danceable Cornish and English music.

With two experienced callers there is every chance that the hugely successful event of 2011 will be even better in the larger venue of the Acorn.

So book your tickets early and get your Golowan festival off to a lively start.

Golowan Festival, Penzance

Golowan was one of the last mid-Summer Festivals practiced in Cornwall.

In the 1890s, the Penzance government outlawed the Festival due to the rising insurance premiums for the towns business community. Traditionally blazing tar barrels had been paraded around the town's streets and the surrounding hills had bonfires set at the top, which were seen all around Mounts Bay and beyond.

The Golowan Festival brings the past and present together in Penzance’s community celebration of the traditional Feast of St. John, featuring The Golowan Band, Penglaz, Serpent Dances, The Quay Fair, the demonic democracy of the Mock Mayor Elections, Summer Fire, seaborne visitors to Sea and Sail and Quay Fair Day, banners and greenery, giant imagery and parades.

The Golowan Festival has become the most colourful community festival in the South West – totally unique, nationally and internationally, but never losing its sense of tradition and place, blending Cornish tradition with contemporary imagery and ritual.
