Date: Saturday 29th October 2016
Nominated for Jazz FM Breakthrough Act of the Year 2016, Nérija (pronounced Ne-ree-ya) is a collective of up and coming, London-based musicians formed from a Tomorrow’s Warriors initiative seeking to encourage young women to play jazz.
With influences from jazz, hip hop and afro beat, Nerija is blazing a trail for women in jazz. A highlight of the 2015 Manchester Jazz Festival, their set was broadcast live on BBC Radio Jazz on 3.
Their unusual line-up of four horns and guitar gives them their distinctive, fresh and current sound. They have toured alongside top UK jazz musicians including Nathaniel Facey of Empirical and Zoe Rahman, with their debut CD due for release in Summer 2016.
“Nérija brought together elements of South African, West African, Caribbean and contemporary British jazz sounds. It was great to see – and hear – these young up-and-coming musicians performing with such soul and a sense of adventure." Jazzwise
