Words & Music Gig : Jools on Wheels - Festival Fringe Event
The Acorn, Parade Street, Penzance, TR18 4BU

Date: Thursday 26th July 2012
Time: 20:00
'Words and Music' gig, with Jools on Wheels, playing their special brand of 'road music', a blend of folk, gypsy and rock.
Touring again in the UK this summer, in the past they have appeared at the Port Eliot and Edinburgh
Festivals among many other venues.
Jools on Wheels is a rare musical specimen group founded by Julie Biereye, singer, accordion
player, and actress. Born in England she grew up on the road, between the family caravan and the
stage of the well known Footsbarn Travelling Theatre, in a nomadic, Shakespearian, clownesque,
cosmopolitan and musical world.
In 2008, Julie decided to create her own music group in Paris, mixing traditional, rock and folk,
around the compositions in English of David Johnston, "songwriter", also an ex-member of the
Footsbarn.
She then teamed up with Nicolas Deguilhem, singer musician poly-instrumentalist, with
an eclectic experience ranging from classical training to traditional music, rock and improvisation.
This new partnership inspired them to bring a touch of imaginary musical folklore to their creations.
Erik Manoury, a mad “rhythms machine” and genius creator of sound samples, joined the group in
2010.
Csaba Palotaï, electric guitar and vocals, and Jeff Hallam, bass and vocals, arrived in spring 2011
to bring their original touch and complete the arrangements of the band. With those two virtuosos
and experienced musicians the group has defined its own idea of folk/rock and popular music.
The songs are composed by Julie Biereye, David Johnston and Nicolas Deguilhem. The lyrics are
written by Julie Biereye and David Johnston.
Jools on Wheels' songs stage characters inspired by real life, narrate travelogues of nomadic life, sketch more abstract sensations, or invoke the timeless struggle between wild nature and
the concrete jungle. They become scenes of a road movie, an invitation to cross continents and
climates, traveling from whispered intimacies to the roaring of stormy oceans…
