Helen Doe :
‘I, too, would find my Ship’: Daphne du Maurier’s Passion
for the Sea

Daphne du Maurier’s early writing was heavily influenced by the seas around her in Cornwall.

She used local history, her personal knowledge of sailing in local waters and skilfully wove them into fiction.

Dr Helen Doe, author and historian, explores this influence in novels such as Rebecca, I’ll Never be Young again, Frenchman’s Creek, Jamaica Inn and The King’s General.

She reveals the events that inspired Daphne’s fiction, including the real tragedy that was behind the sinking of the yacht in which Rebecca’s body is found.

Wine and soft drinks available.

Sponsored by The Jamaica Inn.
