Katie Kirk & Rick Williams

Katie Kirk and Rick Williams combine a love of early music with an ear for timeless quality behind contemporary songs. They recapture the feel of folk clubs of old. Paring their narratives of life, loss and landscape back to the essentials, Rick and Katie’s performances have compelling warmth and authenticity.

Katie Kirk is a singer, voice-coach, performer and mother based in West Cornwall, with a background in environmentalism, political campaigns and community development. She develops and performs spoken word and musical work in a number of settings including care homes, schools, museums and communities as well as working with theatre companies such as WildWorks, Perthi Kov, The Minack Youth Theatre Company, Golden Tree, Awen, The Home Service, The Writers’ Block and The Story Republic.

Katie has sung since childhood, took formal instruction from an early age, sang choral work, jazz, blues and country-Americana during her formative years and has worked with a number of respected musicians in Cornwall over the past decade. Her experience, technique, expression and her love of stories combine to yield a crystal clear, moving, time-stilling experience.

Rick Williams is a multi-instrumentalist and composer, born and bred in Newlyn. Rick’s arrangements stem from his heritage in Male Voice Choirs, and a fascination for quirky found sounds and dialogue. Liberated by punk and post punk, Rick discovered his real inspiration in John Peel‘A man who could play anything from anywhere and any time and it was all equally significant.’

He has composed for film and theatre: ‘Otter’n a Bitch Mackerel’ and ‘Three O’Clock Rock’ (short theatre & film pieces written by Pauline Sheppard illustrating social issues in Cornwall). He has also composed and collaborated with writer Callum Mitchell, film maker Mark JenkinGolden Tree and taught choral arrangements to Collective Arts and o-region. He has arranged Charles Causley poems for The Story Republic; and is a founder member, along with his father, of the a cappella group Boilerhouse.

Currently touring with writer AnnaMaria Murphy and Bagas Degol (of which he is a founder member) with their production ‘Salt Road’. He sits in regularly for ceilidh bands and also teaches guitar and ukulele. He loves to take his ears out for a bike ride to catch sounds and is never far from a cup of tea. Recently the duo have performed at Looe Music Festival, the Eden Project, St Ives September Festival, Golowan and Bodmin Folk clubs.

NB For tonight's performance the Guildhall's seating will be arranged 'in the round',  creating a far more intimate performance space
