'Burton' - Performed by: Rhodri Miles

Date: Sunday 23rd April 2017
Time: 15:00

Written by: Gwynne Edwards
Directed by: Gareth Armstrong
Performed by: Rhodri Miles

Richard Burton was one of the 20th Century’s greatest actors.  He was also known for his passion; his passion for acting, his passion for women and, regrettably, his passion for drinking.

Burton possessed a natural magnetism, so often absent from today’s actors.  He oozed charisma.  His acting was compelling and his voice possessed a warmth and richness; each syllable he spoke was impeccably delivered with honesty, sincerity and with more feeling and emotion than even the words writers could have dreamt possible.

Actor Rhodri Miles vividly presents the life of his countryman, the great actor, Richard Burton, from his humble beginnings in Wales, to Hollywood mega-stardom.

Beautiful women (not least, Elizabeth Taylor), alcohol, wealth, tales of stage and screen are the threads woven into this sad, happy, exuberant, often hilarious life-story, touchingly depicted with consummate skill and bringing the icon to life on stage.

Riddled with inconsistencies and infidelities, Burton’s sole and constant mistress was alcohol.  This was the only real relief for his deteriorating health and mental state, his doomed tempestuous relationship with Taylor and his constant guilt over the abandonment of his family.

Burton was adored by millions of both sexes.  He experienced both the highest heights and the lowest lows in both his professional and personal lives.  The award-winning performance of Burton by Miles, gives us one final chance to revel in the company of a man who declared himself to be “… put on this earth to raise sheer hell!”

RHODRI MILES, (Game of Thrones, Eastern Promises, Atlantis) takes on the role of the younger Richard Burton and received critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and also Hollywood fringe festival where the play won 'Best International' show.  Miles’s portrayal of Burton is a textbook example of a character study - intense, intimate, and deeply humane.

Winner of ‘Best International Show’ at the Hollywood Fringe Festival.
