'The Delights of the Theorbo'

Italian inspiration for French musicians

The theorbo, the giant of the lute family and not surprisingly an Italian invention, was used in France from the mid-17 th century as an accompanying but as a solo instrument,

The programme includes works by Giovanni Girolamo Kapsperger, Charles Hurel, Estienne le Moine and Robert de Visée.

Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687), the most important composer during the reign of Louis XIV, often used the instrument in his operas and his ‘inimitable’ style was an inspiration for French 17th century theorbo players such as Charles Hurel, Estienne le Moine and Robert de Visée. This can be heard in their arrangements of Lully's Airs d'opéra as well as in their own pieces.

In addition, their preludes contain typical Italian style elements (tied runs, campanella effects…) as we know from the Roman virtuoso Giovanni Girolamo Kapsperger (c. 1580-1651). Recently discovered pieces will also be performed in this programme.
