Wizz Jones and Pete Berryman
Inspired by hearing Big Bill Broonzy and Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Wizz Jones learnt his guitar licks from the likes of Davy Graham and Long John Baldry whilst playing in the coffee bars of London's Soho in the late 1950's.
He then followed the time-honoured buskers' trail from the streets of Paris to the markets of Marrakech during the early 1960's and returned to Britain with a unique acoustic guitar style, an eclectic repertoire and a 'right hand worthy of Broonzy'!
John Renbourn, Clapton and Keith Richards have all named him as an important early influence and in May 2012 Bruce Springsteen opened his Berlin show with Wizz's song 'When I Leave Berlin'.
After more than 50 years 'on the road' Wizz continues to tour on the Acoustic Folk and Blues circuit. Wizz has been a regular here in Calstock over the years and we look forward to another great show this time with his long time compatriot Pete Berryman.
Guitarist, composer and singer songwriter arrived on the acoustic music scene in the late 1960s with The Famous Jug Band.
At this time he recorded with Ralph McTell, Wizz Jones, Al Stewart, and his influential album of guitar duets with John James, Sky in my Pie.
As it was for most of his contemporaries, including Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, both of whom he performed with, It was the influence of Davy Graham that turned him to the acoustic guitar, but early exposure to jazz and blues had a big effect.
He is a winner of the International Pan Celtic Song Contest.
Pete now lives in Cornwall performing, collaborating, recording or touring with Kneehigh Theatre, The Barneys, Theatre Rotto, Blue Ticket, West, Brenda Wootton, Cornwall Songwriters, The Mo Band, Banana, Corncrow, Tony Oreshko, To Life Theatre, Michael Chapman, Wizz Jones, Burton Bradstock, Maarten Eijsker, Jessica Styles, Jim Causley, and Silvia Nicolatto.
