Film Season: An Angel At My Table - directed by Jane Campion.

Date: Wednesday 13th September 2017
Time: 19:30

An Angel At My Table

Documentary drama directed by Jane Campion.

Starring Kerry Fox & Alexia Keogh. (1990)

New Zealand's most treasured poet and writer Janet Frame is the subject of this bittersweet film by acclaimed director Jane Campion.

The film is divided into three autobiographical dramatizations: To The Island, An Angel At My Table and The Envoy From Mirror City.

We start with Janets childhood, showing her as an odd-looking, emotionally fragile child growing up in a poor rural family in 1924.

Then we move on to adolescence and years spent in a mental institution, misdiagnosed with schizophrenia, and finally to her liberation due to the publication of her work and her travels through Europe, discovering herself and the bohemian literary world

The script and its portrayal is lush, vivid and full of little personal details.

Each of the three actors who play her as child, teenager and adult are tremendous.

All take the nuances of Janet and develop the character beautifully.

Kerry Fox in particular is exceptional.

Jane Campion has created a totally absorbing film which tells its story calmly and with great attention to human detail, unsentimental in its honesty and veering wonderfully between normality and madness.
