Martyn Wyndham-Read & Iris Bishop

Martyn Wyndham-Read never fails to impress with his high quality singing and captivating interpretation of songs. Perfect accompaniment is provided by Iris Bishop, one of the most accomplished concertina and piano accordion players there is.

Martyn Wyndham-Read is an English folk singer, notable as a collector and singer of Australian folk songs, having lived and worked in Australia from 1960 to 1967 and a regular visitor ever since.
In 1967 he met up with the renowned singer and song collector Bert Lloyd, who himself had spent time in Australia. They collaborated on the album ‘Leviathan’ on the Topic label. Soon after Martyn started recording for Bill Leader.

In the early 1970s Wyndham-Read started the ‘Maypoles to Mistletoe’ concerts which portray the seasons of the year through song, music, dance and verse.
This show has been performed for the last 37 years and has in itself become a tradition at Christmas time in and around the Sussex area.
Martyn fell in love with the Australian traditional songs and is known for singing these, and English traditional songs, as well as newer material by songwriters such as Graeme Miles, Mike Silver, Eric Bogle, amongst many.

Iris Bishop is widely recognised for her skill and originality on that uniquely English invention – the Duet Concertina, being regarded as the foremost Duet Concertina player.
Associated mostly with her subtle and expressive approach to song accompaniment (on concertina and accordion), her solo repertoire includes styles not usually associated with those instruments.
She regularly accompanies Martyn, with whom she has toured and recorded extensively, and performed in theatre productions including the ‘Maypoles to Mistletoe’ show and ‘Down the Lawson Track’.
She is teaching and inspiring a new generation of players at regular concertina workshops, while continuing to perform with a variety of singers, including Marilyn Bennett and Carolyn Robson.
