Neshima Dance & Swerve Dance Theatre Company present Subtext
Subtext is a rare opportunity to experience two emerging South West based dance companies who have been applauded as exciting and accessible.
Subtext is a dynamic and contemporary evening exploring the themes of languages and communication using unique and explosive dance fused with witty and vibrant theatre.
The performance investigates the nuances and rhythms of language, physicalizes the subtlety of routine communication, and guides the audience through a journey of words.
Bristol based Neshima Dance Company was founded by Artistic Director & Choreographer, Batel Magen.
Neshima takes it’s name from Hebrew for ‘breath’ and the company lives up to its name by incorporating and embodying the use and quality of breath in its repertoire, and the voice through original musical scores. Neshima has been supported by Bristol City Council and the Arts Council England. Between 2009-2012 they have performed at Resolutions, The Place, London, The Barbican in Plymouth, Swindon Dance and The Brewery.
Artistic Director & Choreographer, Helen Ganberg founded Swindon based, Swerve Dance Theatre Company in 2005.
Helen is Laban trained and received an Alpha Associate Award for Choreographic Research and Development in 2007. Swerve performs vibrant, varied and visual Dance Theatre that incorporates strong collaborations with music, design and text and has performed at The Place, Woking Dance Festival, Swindon Dance, The Cheltenham Literature Festival, Oxford Arts Festival, Swindon Street Festival, The Big Chill Festival and The Wyvern Theatre amongst others and is an Associate company of Swindon Dance.
“I believed just about everything their bodies did in Batel Magen's vigorous study of largely non-verbal communication... the cast invested even familiar-seeming material with honesty, passion and personality. Magen likewise demonstrated commendable compositional variety.” Donald Hutera
“Helen Ganberg has a tangible artistic gift and creates beautiful dances.” Helen Miah, Head of Culture, Swindon Borough Council
“I would like to express how impressed I am with Batel Magen and her work with Neshima. It was a real joy to see how well the tour (2010) was received by all, including the series of popular performances, the four dates that the pieces were showing at The Brewery were all sold out, and the response from the audience was fantastic.” Phillippa Haynes, Ex Head of Arts and Culture Bristol City Council
“The company are indeed a jewel to have in residence at Swindon Dance and we have been delighted to support their work.” Marie McCluskey, Artistic Director Swindon Dance
“Tall Stories performed by Swerve is engaging and charming.... loads to enjoy and refreshingly thought provoking too.” Mark Powell, Salisbury Playhouse
