Stela

Improbable? But true! One of the largest countries in Europe throughout its turbulent history has developed wide variety of musical tradition in every region, each distinguished by its own songs and dances, characteristic melodies and unique instruments. While travelling across this beautiful country one might be surprised that music would change as often as the landscape.
Stela is a group of young musicians fascinated with rediscovering the cultural heritage of Suwalki region, but that doesn't mean storytelling and quaint melodies. Musicians use old instruments like fiddle or pedal accordion, and shift them in modern way with intricate arrangements.
Traditional songs with their shrilling vocals are the basis of the band’s repertory, but while their principle is acoustic, the impressions are modern. The sound is defined by jazz-inflected rhythms and harmonies, based on confident journey from old to new musical territory.
Girls sing with the traditional cutting tone of „white voice“, accompanied by drone harmonies of Slavic songs.
A good opportunity to take a closer look towards the Polish folk scene.
